Margaret Lampert just finished a week of shooting stills and motion in Tucson, Arizona and San Francisco for the Cord Blood Registry. With the fabulous Jenny Bullock at the helm, a stellar crew was assembled and not a detail was left untended. When you add a great creative team and wonderful client to the mix, it was in Margaret's words "a charmed week". Many thanks to everyone who helped make it such a success and thank you to our terrific DP Courtney Perkins who also snapped these photos of Margaret in action!

In early May, Bill Gastinger Art Producer from Y&R New York called to consider Margaret Lampert for an important ad campaign for their client, Fisher Price. We spoke at length about the goals of the agency with this campaign - to move the brand in a new direction, as the client had previously tended towards a more controlled look, studio environments and highly stylized photography. The centerpiece of this new direction was looser, more organic, location driven real photography, and I knew from the start that this was a campaign made for Margaret. We successfully bid and won the job and had a wonderful experience both with Lesley Esan, the Art Director and Bill Gastinger, the Art Producer, as well as a great support crew through Lockbox Productions. The ads are breaking now, we will share a few with you here.

When I was in Boston a few weeks ago, there were some last minute changes that resulted in my having to re-schedule my appointment at Mechanica. I first met Libby DeLana about 15 years ago at Mullen, and with the help of certain social media sites and Libby's love of Northern California, have stayed connected with her. When it became clear I wouldn't be able to make the trek to Newburyport on that trip, I was VERY disappointed. In the most generous gesture, Margaret Lampert offered to host the show after my departure, which she did today. Margaret did a fantastic job, bringing lovely breakfast treats from Flour, and when an Art Director had a question about Matthew Turley's work that she couldn't answer, Margaret called Matthew and put him on the phone with the Art Director. Thank you Margaret, you can pinch-hit for me anytime!

A few weeks ago I made a long overdue trip to Boston. Showing the portfolios is always my favorite, but I was especially anticipating this one because it meant I would be able to spend some time with my Boston-based photographer, Margaret Lampert. Despite the unseasonably rainy weather, we made the rounds with visits to Mullen, Full Contact, Connelly Partners, Digitas and Arnold and stops in between at Margaret's wonderfully situated office on Newbury Street. I often brag about the incredible camaraderie amongst my group of photographers, and it was yet again exemplified on this trip. While I was expecting Margaret to accompany me to all of my shows as a guest, what I did not anticipate, was the way in which she took on the role of co-host. Repeatedly I would be on one side of the room engaged in conversation and I would look over to see Margaret showing and espousing the talents of one of my other photographers work. The evenings were as fun-filled as the appointment days, as I saw old friends from college, had dinner with my good friend from San Francsico, Steven Mietelski and was even treated by Margaret and her friends to a waterfront concert by Florence + the Machine. Thank you Margaret for making the trip so special!

Watching my photographers evolve and grow in this ever-changing landscape has been nothing short of inspirational. The ease with which they have all expanded their repertoire to include video, and the seemingly effortless way their unique styles have transitioned to the new medium is amazing. Margaret Lampert is the the latest to translate her poignant, organic, real imagery to motion with her first video, Nest. When I asked Margaret to write something about the process, this is what she had to say.

"This piece represents my first experience with video. As much as it is all about four sisters and their innocent beauty it is equally about finding my way in a new medium. I am quite thrilled by how seamlessly my sensibility has translated to motion.

Coming from a background in fiction writing, I have always wanted to tell stories with pictures. The ability to let the camera roll through one moment and into the next feels like pure magic. I have this sense that I am standing at the edge of an enchanted forest. The possibilities are as exciting as they are endless and I can’t wait to see what’s around the next corner."

INSTEREO is a collaborative fine art project between Chrstine Alicino and Ursula Brookbank. Daily images were captured via iPhone and atmospherically transmitted resulting in 365 unforeseen pairings. Christine and Ursula have been working together commercially for years through Ursula's role as an Art Director for Nordstrom's, but this synchronistic image exchange is one of their fine art collaborations. The premier screening of INSTEREO will take place Saturday, 2.26.11 at 8pm at the Echo Park Film Center Annex in Glendale, California. If you are lucky enough to live close enough to attend the premiere, do! If not, you can view the work here.

I have always been the kind of person who wants all people in my life to know one another. As such, I've always made sure that my group of photographers have had ample opportunity to meet and socialize with one another. I often host and arrange for dinners for us all to get together as a group. When I know one photographer has a question or needs information that might be another photographer's expertise, I encourage them to call each other. The result of one such call was beautifully articulated in this blog post by Jamie Kripke, about Matthew Turley. I got to see another manifestation of this camaraderie this winter when I had TWO simultaneous collaborative shoots; Michael Lamotte and Margaret Lampert worked together for Frito Lay, and Christine Alicino and RJ Muna worked together for Lastacaft. (Christine shot the stills, while RJ captured the HD video.) Both were very successful in no small part because of the mutual support and friendship that is fostered amongst our group. So today, when I spoke with both Matthew Turley and Jamie Kripke about their weekend, I got this photo back. They spent the day skiing together yesterday, and both called me today to tell me how much they liked and admired the other. I'll say we have something special in our group.

Christine Alicino shot the beautiful portraits and flowers at LeftSpace Studios with wonderful styling and hair and makeup by Micah Bishop and Renee Rael. Blackwell Files provided the talent, and G~10 handled the post production. To top it off, we got to work with one of our favorite art buyers, Shannon Wright.

I was lucky enough to be invited to Director Peter Sellars home in LA to shoot him for the cover of Opera News Magazine.

I called him from NY to go over the details and assured him we could get everything done in the 3-4 hour time period he had available. When I arrived at his home Peter greeted my assistant and I with a hug and it just kept getting better. Whatever I suggested he couldn't have been more excited and

eager to do. We set up in his living room for the "studio" portrait and also shot him in his roof cactus garden and his office. The tight shot was my favorite and became the Feb. cover.

What an absolute honor and pleasure it was to speak at the World Photography Organisation's first US Festival held at Left Space Studios in San Francisco. I was asked to participate on a panel presentation and discussion about Marketing & Commercializing alongside photographers RJ Muna, Elliott Erwitt, Brian Smith, and marketing director Rhiannon MacFadyen. The panel was expertly moderated by photo editor Scott Thode. While my focus was espousing the keys to a successful, long-term photographer/agent relationship as well as the strategy for marketing a multi-faceted photographer like RJ Muna, each panel member shared his or her unique perspective on the topic. It was great fun and I look forward to the next opportunity (London, Shanghai, Sao Paulo...?)

We had a fantastically collaborative photo shoot for Frito Lay last week. Michael Lamotte was selected to shoot the Portfolio ad campaign for Goodby Silverstein & Partners, and when in the 11th hour they added some lifestyle kid shots, Margaret Lampert agreed to fly in from Boston to contribute her expertise! With amazing food styling by Stephanie Greenleigh, great prop and wardrobe styling by Hiroshi, adorable kids from Blackwell Files, perfect sets by Scene 2, great clients from Frito and a really fun creative team from Goodby, it just doesn't get any better than this! I was on my way to a portfolio show at DDB this morning when the traffic on 101 all but halted. As I was stopped and not moving, I glanced down at the Facebook newsfeed and saw Norman Maslov's posting that the Golden Gate Bridge was closed due to an injury accident. Wondering whether or not I should turn around, I called Nick at DDB, and he said he'd save the conference room and 'guard' my food until I got there. The bridge opened and I slowly made my way in, and as I got to Columbus Ave., Candace Gelman called me on my cell, from the next traffic lane over. After spending my hour long ride (accompanied by Norman and Candace by cell), I finally got to the agency and had a great show, thanks to the cheerleading efforts of Nick and Issy.

This is a great story. Two years ago, almost exactly, we hosted a party in NYC at SoHo House to celebrate the anniversary of opening our Marianne Campbell Associates office on 5th Avenue in New York. I asked all of my photographers to fly in for the party, which they did. One of the Art Buyers we invited to the party, Allison Candage emailed saying she was unable to attend, but sent two others from her office in her place (a very nice gesture considering we had never worked with anyone at the agency). We totally connected with both of Allison's "stand-ins", Michael Kaminski and Kate Bressand from Juice Pharma. Jim Salzano of course is based in New York and continued to nurture the relationship post party. There have been a few false starts, but today we FINALLY did our first job with Juice. And we have another one coming down the pike. It just goes to show you how important the human connection is. Thanks for the great job today Michael and Allison - it was well worth the wait.

Allegra Wilde talked about our innovative approach in an interview with The Photography Post. What started with a shared New York associate, has segued into co-hosting parties and combined portfolio showings. I was talking to my photog friend Matthew Turley a few months back about 4x5 cameras.  He is a master of the format, and makes big, beautiful, pictures that I wish I had made.  I've never owned a 4x5, but am getting more interested in them as the digital workflow accelerates and becomes closer to real time.  It just seems like a great compliment to shooting everything digitally.   Slow, crafty, thoughtful vs. fast, instant, loose.

At some point in our conversation I recall saying how much I'd love to hit the road with a 4x5 and shoot landscapes, one sheet at a time, but that my life just feels too hectic for that to be a reality, with two young kids, a house remodel, and trying to stay afloat in the current economy.

A week later a plain brown box shows up on my doorstep.  Inside is a Graflex SpeedGraphic 4x5 camera and 10 sheets of neg film, along with detailed, hand-drawn directions on how to run the thing:

I spend literally 30 minutes just looking at it -- and trying to locate the secret button that opens it.  Eventually I find it and the inner workings of the SpeedGraphic are revealed.  It's a hand held camera with a focal plane shutter (up to 1/1000 sec!) rangefinder focusing, and a big piece of beautiful ground glass on the back.  

To be honest it's a bit intimidating, as if an amazing camera deserves an amazing subject.  The first thing I thought to do was take a picture of it (above) b/c it was just so cool looking.

I took it along on a recent editorial shoot, but it was sleeting sideways, so it never came out.  This morning, I shot two sheets at an empty car dealership by my studio.  I love the handicraft and how precious the film feels.  I found myself really taking extra time to study the compostion and fine tune everything.   We'll see how it turns out, or if it even turns out at all.

I met Loni Weholt in 1994 or 1995. We developed an incredible friendship while she produced jobs for several of my photographers. She would often be gone for months at a time on assignments, but we would always get together upon her return and it was as if no time had passed. Loni is one of the most passionate human beings I have ever met. Passionate about photography, design, life, work, relationships, friendships, Stretch, you name it...

Over the past few years, our paths diverged and we were no longer in as much regular contact. Because we were not as connected on a daily basis, it made it all the more difficult to swallow the intense email I received from Loni detailing her health crisis. In July, Loni was diagnosed with neuroendocrine small cell carcinoma of the cervix and has since undergone extensive chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. There is a very important fundraiser and party for Loni upcoming Thursday, April 8th, and I want to do everything in my power to make sure it is the blockbuster event it should be. There will be a live auction including prints from Nadav Kander, Lauren Greenfield, Hans Gissinger, Lis Von Hoene, Stephen Wilkes and John Midgley to name a few. michael lamotte's imagery used to re-brand upscale burger restaurant

Michael Lamotte was hired by Jennifer Jerde at Elixir Design to help with the imagery for the re-branding of what was previously Taylor's Refresher. The upscale burger restaurant, based in St. Helena, CA and with outposts in Napa and San Francisco's Ferry Building has recently undergone a name change to Gott's Roadside. Michael created a modular system for them by shooting various menu items individually and the tray empty so they could change the contents of the tray as needed for different applications. His post production company, Greenbox Imaging applied a treatment to give the images an old-time menu feel.

matthew turley spends 2 months shooting in europe

Matthew Turley recently spent over two months in Europe shooting stock and personal work. Making his way via planes, trains, and automobiles (along with countless ferries, tunnels, trams and trails), he covered nearly 5,000 miles in Norway alone before heading south and railing through central and eastern Europe - all the while looking for the most quiet and out-of-the-way places he could find.

Christine Alicino
In the words of Elise Blaha, “Some genius has taken over the Nordstrom print ad campaign.” Collaborating with Art Director Ursula Brookbank, we know that our genius Christine Alicino was instrumental in the powerhouse of creatives responsible for Nordstrom’s new look-The Snapshot Campaign, a large format 16”x20”, twenty page, uncoated stock mail piece. The campaign included an online thematic video also created by Christine, edited by Jordan Biren.

Both Summer and Fall pieces were commended with rave reviews.

Matthew Turley
On a Northwest Road trip, Matthew covered 6 States in 10 days, a total of 2,500 miles. While exploring, he shot the North Cascades Smokejumpers in Methow Valley, WA—the home of smokejumping. And for those of you who have never hear of smokejumping, click here for an interesting history.

Fortune Small Business Magazine very recently commissioned Matthew to shoot in the Wasatch mountains above Salt Lake City, UT. Climbing Mt. Superior (11,139') at 5 am, a regular for these real people talent, Matthew captured, Black Diamond CEO and designers playing with and testing their own gear designs before work heading to the office. These execs weren’t the only daredevils that morning; Matthew shot and climbed with 4x5 & 8x10 equipment in tow!

James Salzano

Jim Salzano's bookings have transported him across North America within the past six months. Starting in CA, he shot for Cambridge Biomarketing of Boston. The campaign featured shots of real people for TAC Health Care. While there he also nabbed a photo of waitress to add to his ongoing waitress series.

Then off north to Canada to shoot the hottest teen sensation, young pop stars, The Jonas Brothers for Digitas Boston and General Motors' green campaign.

From Boston Jim swung west to Window Rock, Arizona. A stark contrast to the pop scene phenomenon, this shot called for an introspective portrait of one of the tribal leaders of the Navajo nation for a campaign about the dangers of second hand smoke.

Jamie Kripke

Fast Company and Joni West's Second Life marketing company commissioned Jamie Kripke this past Fall on a shoot only possible in today's cyber era.

Joni's concept included hiring virtual avatars, shot in her virtual photo studio with virtual lights and a virtual camera. The camera rotates in cyberspace to capture various angles and focal lengths.

Next step, Joni hires Jamie to shoot an art gallery to drop her avatars into a real frame. Jamie takes the digital files of her virtual avatars and composites them into his digital gallery shots. Final shot, a meeting of two worlds in one unified space. Wild.

Michael Lamotte

Phillip Ting, AD, Elephant Advertising of Berkeley, CA & Peets Coffee & Tea brought Michael Lamotte on board for a sweet holiday campaign. Given creative license to lend his seasoned sensibilities to an open interpretation of Peets signature branding, Michael captured the warmth of the holidays in the perfect winter warmer-upper.

Currently in stores and on Peets' website, the final shots resulted in an invitation from the client to flavor future talks on the creative drawing board.
